A Personal Path to Organ Donation

Hi friends,

I’ve decided to write this from the bottom of my heart, more to inspire people to consider tissue and organ donation. I’m not very brave, so it took me quite a long time to convince myself to do it. However, that’s very weird because both my mom and I have discussed this frequently, since I was a child. We want to donate our organs and bodies to save others if given the chance. However, we didn’t make a move because of two main reasons in the past.

Firstly, I feel hurt if my beloved ones are not “whole” when they’re going to heaven. That means, I feel okay myself if I donate my organs and body, but if my mom does it, I feel pained as I love her. I want her to have a full body to carry with her to the next life. However, later I realized it’s the spirit that you carry with you, not the body; the body will return to the mother of earth.

The second reason sounds ridiculous, but based on conspiracy theories, I am afraid that if some affluent individuals need my organs, I may be harmed for them. Maybe I have watched too many of these types of movies.

However, the thought of giving myself is becoming bigger and bigger, especially during challenging times in my life. Besides, I know some friends did it, and young people on social media did it, which gives me more motivation and strengthens my decision.

I finally decided to do it before my 32nd birthday, and now I’m waiting for the final card that I can carry in my wallet everywhere.

I remember a story that was shared on the internet many years ago. It’s about Thane Chiquinho Scarpa. The story about a wealthy businessman in Brazil who wanted to bury his beloved $450,000 Bentley Flying Spur became an internet sensation in 2013.

“People have condemned me for trying to bury a million-dollar Bentley. The fact is, most people bury something a lot more valuable than my car. People bury hearts, livers, lungs, eyes, and kidneys. This is absurd. There are so many people out there waiting for a transplant, and you will bury healthy organs that can save so many lives. This is the biggest waste in the world. My Bentley is worthless in comparison to life-giving organs. There is no wealth more valuable than an organ because there is nothing more valuable than life.”

You can watch the video HERE.

Also, another day, I listened to a Spanish colleague and learned that Spain has one of the highest organ donation rates, and she said this with pride 😊

Then I decided, I don’t want to carry these alive organs to the mother of earth while many people still need them to continue their lives.

Especially, corneas donation, may provide the gift of sight to someone who needs new corneas. Some eye banks have historically had upper age limits of 65 years, but this varies. Even people who may be unable to donate other organs can usually become cornea donors.

If you somehow see this article and have been considering organ donations, this is a sign that you should register now.

In each country, there probably will have a different platform to register; HERE is the one I used.

Thank you for your reading.
