🎄🎅 Merry Christmas, everyone 🎅🎄
If you haven’t already, you can check out my first post about this book, The Rules of Management. That’s where my journey with these reflections began.
Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on two more rules from the book that stood out to me.
Rule #39: Set the Standard
“Everyone needs someone to look up to.”
This reminds me of one of IKEA’s key values: “Lead by example.” At IKEA, leadership is viewed as an action, not just a title. The focus is on values—seeking individuals who ‘walk the talk’ and inspire others through their actions.

For me, being a role model means aligning my thoughts, words, and actions. If any of these are inconsistent, it can create confusion or even mistrust among those around me. While people may not notice right away, over time, inconsistencies become clear.
That’s why I try to provide transparency whenever my perspective changes. By explaining the reasons behind my decisions, I aim to build understanding and trust. Leadership, to me, is about being authentic and accountable—not perfect, but genuine.
Rule #40: Enjoy Yourself
“We need to get you feeling good about what you’re feeling.”
This is something I’m still learning. I’ve always been tough on myself, quick to criticize and slow to recognize my strengths. Often, I only see the positive in hindsight or after someone points it out to me.
This rule reminds us that it’s possible to work hard and enjoy ourselves at the same time. Many of us face struggles at work and carry those challenges home with us. But if work becomes a constant source of unhappiness, it’s worth asking: Do I need to change myself, or do I need to change my environment?
Ultimately, I’m striving for ikigai—that sweet spot where passion, profession, and purpose align. It’s a journey, but for now, I’m learning to appreciate the small joys in my work and practice self-compassion along the way.

Thank you for taking the time to read this reflection. These rules are helping me grow, and I hope they offer you something meaningful too.
