Public Speaking

I’ve always loved watching people speak on stage. It’s inspiring to see how they express themselves through words, body language, and facial expressions. The way they engage the audience—make them laugh, reflect, or even cry—feels like a superpower. Those golden, silent pauses that give space for thought always amaze me.

But for me, just standing in a crowded room can make my heart race. Being on stage? That felt like torture.

Still, I knew I had to challenge myself. The first time I ever stood on a stage was as an MC for a charity event. I honestly don’t think I did very well. Later, the charity organizer even told me about another girl who hosted a different event and how amazing she was compared to me. That stung—and after that, I avoided speaking on stage altogether.

Until about a year ago.

My son’s school asked if I could give a short speech at an event. It took me a while to decide, but eventually, I said yes. I remembered some advice I’d received long ago from a Communication Leader:

  • Own the topic.
  • Look toward the audience, even if you’re focusing on a far-off point—it gives the sense of eye contact.
  • Practice and then practice again.

The first few words were the hardest. But once I got going, I found my rhythm, and surprisingly, I felt calm. I actually enjoyed it. And when I stepped down from the stage, I felt proud—I saw a confidence in myself that hadn’t been there before.

Now, I even feel encouraged to learn public speaking more seriously. Just a few weeks ago, I attended a Leadership for Leaders training at work. The facilitator was incredible—so inspiring and natural on stage. We asked him for tips, and it turns out, he studied public speaking too. I believe he’s naturally gifted, but he’s also a great example of what dedication and practice can achieve. He’s the kind of speaker I’d love to become one day.

Maybe, someday, I’ll go from being the person who was terrified of public speaking to someone who steps on stage with confidence—sharing stories that inspire others.

Who knows? 😊

Thank you.
