The Balance Wheel

It was my first coaching session related to my career path. During the session, my coach introduced me to the Balance Wheel and asked me to reflect on it—estimating my level of satisfaction in each segment by drawing a line to illustrate my current perception.

Yes, it was my first time seeing this wheel, and it gave me a helpful overview of the different parts of life.

As we continued, I also drew a second line to show the level I want to reach in each segment. After this first session, I discovered and learned a few key things:

  • I don’t expect myself to reach the maximum score in every segment. I’m content with fulfilling certain segments to a comfortable level—even if that’s not 100%. Why? Because staying slightly below “perfect” keeps me motivated to improve, and I don’t believe in a fixed or absolute definition of growth when it comes to personal development.
  • When we discussed “intimate relationships”, I initially thought it referred only to romantic relationships. But through our conversation, I realized it can also mean the relationship I have with myself. In that sense, I feel quite satisfied. When I’m not spending time with my son, I enjoy reading, journaling, or watching short films. (Though I do miss trekking and being in nature lately!)
  • I’ve received feedback that I tend to react very quickly. I’ve been trying to slow down and create more space for others. What’s interesting is that although I act fast and efficiently in many areas, I’m actually very slow and calm when it comes to rest and relaxation. I take my time folding clothes, wrapping books, or organizing my home. If I had more time, I’d enjoy doing everything slowly. So, could it be that I feel rushed because I’m juggling so much? Is that what pushes me to act quickly in other areas?

In just one hour, we couldn’t explore everything in depth—but I did gain clarity. I now know that 3 out of the 8 segments (well-being, intimate relationships, and other relationships) are not my focus right now with the current level of satisfaction.

Instead, my top priorities are:

  • Physical environment
  • Finances
  • Business/Career

These areas may seem different, but they all contribute to the same overarching goal: my professional development—which is why I registered for coaching in the first place. I want to explore a new position or mobility opportunity.

Of course, I can’t be sure if reaching that goal (a new role or career move) will fully satisfy these 3 areas. But there’s a possibility: a better position or mobility package might mean a better environment, improved income, and more opportunities to grow. My career won’t stop here—or even with the next role. I still have many years of working and contributing ahead of me.

So now, the Balance Wheel has helped sharpen my focus and strengthen the direction of my career goal. It’s clearer where I should dedicate my time and energy, especially with limited resources.

Thank you for the first coaching session—and for introducing the Balance Wheel 😊
